Summer o' Sailing (SOS)   ...Our Adult Learn to Sail Program

SOS Application

J-22 Line Drawing  The J/22

WHO: Any adult member (18 years or older) of the club. No sailing experience required, but it's o.k. if you have some experience. We will try to match people with similar experience so that everyone has the best possible time. You must be able to swim. A Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate is encouraged, but not required.

WHAT: You will learn the basics of sailing, boat handling, terminology, rigging and most importantly, safety.

BOATS: People say the J/22 is the best sailing boat they've ever been on, and the boat that appeals to all ages and skill levels is now garnering more interest than ever before. It's responsive, stable with its fixed lead keel and safe, as much fun to single-hand with a main only as it is to plane under spinnaker in 18 knots of wind.  We are not suggesting as novice or intermediate sailors you start planing under spinnaker immediately, but this summer perhaps all things are possible.

DATES: There is a "Try it free" class set for Wednesday, June 22rd at 6:00 pm.  Regular classes are scheduled to start Wednesday, June 29th at 6:00 p.m. until dark. We will continue every Wednesday night (weather permitting) until Wednesday, August 17th, for a total of 8 classes. The program might be extended beyond this date depending on member interest and instructor availability.

COST: $325 payable at the main office prior to the first class.  The application can be downloaded from the link above or can be picked up at the MYC main office.

RECOMMENDED READING: Available at West Marine, Amazon and elsewhere for under $15

  Basic Keelboat

CHARTERING: Once a student in the program reaches basic sailing proficiency and is signed off by the instructor, they will have the option to "charter" one of the J-22's for their own use. All you have to do is pay an additional one time fee of $200 and you will have a summer's worth of access to a boat, provided it is not in use by other MYC programs (e.g. SOS). The dock office will maintain a sign-up list. NOTE: MYC members who are qualified sailors with a CT Safe Boating Certificate, may choose participate in the summer charter program for a one time fee of $495. They will have equal access to the boats during non-instructional times.
