1903 was remarkable year of firsts; from the first transatlantic radio broadcast between United States and England in January to the first documented, successful, controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight at Kittyhawk in December. In June of that year, a meeting was held at the home of a local doctor to address the needs of boaters in the waters around Milford, Connecticut. The Milford harbor was enjoyed by many in cat boats, sharpies, sloops, and an occasional power boat and there existed a need for winter storage space for hulls and spars, as well as the desire to "encourage yachting and other social recreations." There existed a dwelling owned by a local Oyster Company, and after some deliberation our early members were successful in renting the property and in forming the Milford Yacht Club.
