  • Challenge for the Boardman Cup Regatta – August 6

History of the Boardman: In 1986, “Swim Across the Sound” included a variety of events to raise money to fight cancer.  That year, MYC was approached to include the Milford Invitational Regatta as one of the events.

To add a new dimension to the race, what became the “Challenge for the Boardman Cup” was conceived by then Rear Commodore Ed Becker.  At the time, MYC purchased many of its trophies from the Boardman Silver Company in Meriden, Connecticut, whose generous owner was a member of MYC.  The magnificent trophy, which is approximately three feet tall, was the result of the collaboration between the MYC and the company.

The Boardman Cup was first introduced and awarded at the Milford Invitational Regatta in 1986 and was presented after the race by then Lt. Governor William O’Neil, who would be elected Governor three months later.

The Cup is awarded each year to the Club whose top three finishing spinnaker boats total the lowest score based on their class finishes.

Milford Yacht Club has won the club competition 27 out of the 36 years since its introduction.  Windjammer’s Sailing Club has won it six times and Duck Island Yacht Club has won it once.  Only once since the introduction of the Boardman Cup has the early-August race been abandoned due to insufficient wind.

  • Junior Sailing

It is the mission of the Milford Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program to encourage junior sailors to experience the joy of recreation and/or competitive sailing and to teach the essential elements of performance boat handling, seamanship and racing.  The program strives to instill in our junior sailors self-esteem, a realization of the value of teamwork and the respect of the sea.  The success of our program will not be measured in races won, but in the legacy of the love of the sport.
