June, Letter from the Commodore

Summer Icon

Dear Members,

As I write this letter we are anxiously awaiting the green light for phase two of the reopening of our state. It has been a long haul for our country, state, town and us here at MYC. With all the unfortunate unrest in our country between the COVID-19 pandemic and national protests, it’s nice to know in a couple weeks MYC will be in full swing and it will be a safe and inviting environment for us all to enjoy.

Thank you all for supporting our curb side take out offerings and now, too, our outside dining options. We are anxious and ready for the reopening of our inside restaurant very soon. VC Bud Franke and our management staff have done a great job working with the state and local officials to insure a safe and pleasant atmosphere. They will continue to make the needed temporary adjustments of our R & B operation moving into the next phase of the reopening.

Every day we are monitoring the reopening guidelines and will be quick to respond to get our club in full operation. Our marina is fully operational (please follow the posted temporary rules). Our pool and snack bar is ready to open ASAP when we get the go ahead from the state; we are fully staffed and ready to run our swimming and sailing programs very soon, on or close to the same schedule as a regular season.

See you all for fun summer at MYC!

COVID-19 Marina Policies

MYC Logo

As we are all adjusting to the effect of the Covid pandemic,
I want to announce that the Board of Directors has adopted the following
temporary rules for the marina:

  1. No socializing in groups of more than 5 people.
  2. Observe social separation – 6 feet minimum.
  3. Wear masks when social distancing is not possible.
  4. No non-member transient (guest) boats will be allowed to tie up to the T-Dock or overnight in the marina;
  5. All members that use the Club’s push carts must wear gloves.
  6. The JYC restrooms will remain open.
  7. Masks and gloves are to be worn when being transported by the tender.
  8. Violation of rules can lead to suspension of privileges.

These rules are temporary and will be re-evaluated as circumstances change. For the safety of our members and staff, please observe the rules and have a safe boating season.

Rudder 2020

Dear Members,Commodore Herbert
Welcome to November! Well, it seems as though things may be starting to slow down at the Club, but it’s actually quite the opposite. This is the time of year when the officers, directors, committees and staff are in full swing preparing for the transition into the 2019 season.

We are moving full steam ahead with our pool improvements and with our search for a new pool director and swim team coach. Please contact Rear Commodore Bud Franke if you know of any potential candidates. We are also actively searching for junior sailing instructors, including a new head instructor. Our goal is to raise the bar and to make our programs the best that they can be. If you know of anyone who may be interested in and qualified for the instructor positions, please contact Fleet Captain Bob Farnum.

See you at the Soup Wars table…
Ken Herbert, Commodore

Rudder 2020

Commodore HerbertWelcome to October and fall at MYC! Wow, September went by so quickly and let’s hope that Mother Nature treats us with better weather this month! Despite the weather, we had a busy September with a great Guest Chef Pasta Night, two MYC regattas, Sinatra Night, and of, course, the annual Bluefish Tournament. Thanks go out to all of the volunteers and participants (and special thanks to Alphonse Russo, P.C. who saved this Commodore’s fishing day with a borrowed anchor!)
October will be another busy month at the Club. The first annual MYC Member/Employee Golf Tournament will be held on October 3rd (postponed from September due to inclement weather). Good luck to all! The Columbus Day Regatta will be held on October 7th and on October 18th, the gentlemen of the Club and their guests are looking forward to the annual Men’s Night. Be sure to bring out the kiddies for a fun-filled Kids’ Halloween Party on Friday, October 19th and be sure to join us for the adults’ Monster Bash on October 27th! See if you can figure out who’s behind that mask!

In this edition of The Rudder, you’ll find a very important, informative letter about our pool and upcoming improvements, so please take the time to read it thoroughly. On a sad note, we lost our old friend and former member, Mrs. Ann Hawie, this past month. Our thoughts go out to her family at this very difficult time.

See you at the Monster Bash (if you can figure out who I am)!

Ken Herbert
Commodore

The June Rudder is posted . . .

Rudder 2020

Here we are in June, the summer season is finally here. The pool is open and the MYC kids will be out of school before you know it. Our summer programs begin on Monday, June 25rd and that week ends with the first children’s pool party of season, on Friday, June 29th. For the second year, Ryan, from The Plate, will be running our Snack Bar. The Snack Bar will be open weekends with light fare until June 17th, after which, the hours will follow the pool schedule. The marina is filling up and the grounds look beautiful. It is a great time of year to be a member at MYC!
Our entertainment committee has been filling the calendar and we have many great events planned. We have a very busy June ahead with many member and private events. The member events start with a benefit cocktail reception on Friday, June 1st for the ladies, hosted by my wife, Elena. The annual Blessing of the Fleet is scheduled for Sunday, June 17th and is headed up by Doug Jones, PC and Fleet Captain Bob Farnum. This is a fun day to listen to music provided by The Milford Concert Band and our very own Doc Hermalyn. Watch as the boats are blessed by our Clergy and a we receive a welcome from Milford’s Mayor, and former MYC lifeguard, the Honorable Ben Blake. Oh, and of course, the main attraction, the boat parade. The pasta makers are back on Wednesday, June 27th for our first Guest Chef Pasta Night of the season. This is a well-attended evening, so reservations are a must!

The 5th annual Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, June 18th from 1:00pm to 6:00 pm in memory of Past Commodore Frank Bayers is being held at the Club. Frank was a dear friend of ours and this is a wonderful way to remember him and others in need.

In closing, I would just like to remind the members of our guest book policy. Whether dining in the club or al fresco, please remember to come into the Club to sign your guests in our book. This is a mandate from the State Liquor Commission and required for our liquor license. It also helps identify and make guests and visitors from other clubs feel welcome.

Have a safe and enjoyable start to the summer season!
Ken Herbert, Commodore

Kubota Tractor

A hearty Thank You . . .  to all our fellow members at our annual grounds and pool beautification day! Gardening, painting, mulching and a complimentary lunch made this a perfect spring day!

You all brought your rakes, brooms, trowels and Kubotas! [For background, Kubota was a feudal domain in Japan during the period between 1603 and 1868.] The club looks spectacular, due to your continued support and hard work.
